On August 4th, Peder Svingen counted 3755 shorebirds (21 species) in Section 24, T163N, R40W of Roseau County. Most birds were in the western half of Section 24. This area lies between the Roseau River and Sprague Creek on the east side of Hwy. 310 between 5 and 6 miles north of the city of Roseau. Highlights included 9 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, one PIPING PLOVER, 7 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 31 MARBLED GODWITS, 3 RED KNOTS, 68 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and one RED-NECKED PHALAROPE.
Shorebirds were also found in Grant County by Eddy Edwards on the 4th. Twelve species were observed, including 31 MARBLED GODWITS and 56 WILSON'S PHALAROPES. One location is 2.25 miles southeast of the town of Barrett on Hwy. 55. For a second location at the Spink WPA, go 8.5 miles south of Elbow Lake on Hwy. 54 then turn west and follow the road 0.5 miles.
On Thursday, August 1st, Brian Weed was visiting from Pacific Grove, CA and at Hamden Slough NWR in Becker County, found GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. At the Felton Prairie in Clay County, Brian observed 4 CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS and two pairs of LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES.
On August 6th, the BAIRD'S SPARROW was still present in the same area of Polk County at the gravel pit south of U.S. Hwy. 2. To get to the site, go 3.5 miles west on U.S. Hwy. 2 from it's junction with State Hwy. 32, then turn south and follow the main (gravel pit) road that goes SE for approximately 1.2 miles. Turn west on the intersecting gravel road for about 1/4 mile and look/listen for the bird in the field to the north.
Interesting birds seen at Tamarac NWR in Becker County included a NORTHERN CARDINAL on the 6th, early migrant MAGNOLIA WARBLER and WILSON'S WARBLER, and EVENING GROSBEAK all on the 9th.
