With the arrival of the first real snow and the hunting season, not many birds were reported this week. Most of the open water in the northern part of the area has disappeared under a thin coating of ice, and with that a lot of the waterfowl have gone south. By today, the ice had thickened and Shelley Steva reports that the CANADA GEESE that are hanging around Thief River Falls were left standing on ice this morning and looking somewhat confused.
The SUMMER TANAGER is still coming to the feeder of Grace Mayta and Norma Haugen in downtown Thief River Falls as of Wednesday, November 13th. The bird was seen by Peder Svingen, Andy Joppru and myself on Saturday, November 9th and it is still around today, Thursday. For directions contact Shelley Steva at crossbill7200@yahoo.com .
On November 10th, from our yard along the Red Lake River near Thief River Falls in Pennington County, I saw AMERICAN WIGEON, MALLARD, WOOD DUCK, and HOODED MERGANSER. At the feeder, we have DARK-EYED JUNCOS and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH coming regularly, and this morning there was a PILEATED WOODPECKER looking over the suet offering.
In Polk County, at the Wetlands, Pines, and Prairies Audubon Sanctuary in Polk County, Lori Becker reports that a NORTHERN SHRIKE and AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were seen at the sanctuary. AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES in winter plumage, and PURPLE FINCHES are also there.
>From Ottertail County Dan Thimgan reported a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK near the entrance to Glendalough State Park on November 9th, and a NORTHERN CARDINAL at his feeders near Battle Lake on Sunday, November 10th. He also had a SHORT-EARED OWL on November 13th west of Silver Lake near the town of Battle Lake. Roland Jordahl saw TRUMPETER SWANS on Lake Lizzie and on Lake Franklin. There were RING-BILLED GULLS on Lake Franklin. An AMERICAN KESTREL was spotted along County Road 3 near Fergus Falls. More TRUMPETER SWANS and a BELTED KINGFISHER were found on Lake Lida on November 14th.
In Becker County, Roland saw two BALD EAGLES by Tamarac NWR and TRUMPETER SWANS on Tamarac Lake.
