This week we have definitely moved into the winter mode- the bird sightings are fewer in number and fewer in varity. Temperatures have hovered near zero at night and below 20 during the day.

>From Kittson County, Gladwyn Lynne reported two RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD that have just started coming to the feeders at Lake Bronson State Park. The other birds reported at the park are the typical winter residents: GREAT HORNED OWL, HAIRY WOODPECKER, DOWNY WOODPECKER, BLUE JAY, COMMON RAVEN, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, and WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH.

In Pennington County, we are still seeing the SUMMER TANAGER at the feeder of Grace Mayta in Thief River Falls today and the bird is using the cardboard box she put out for shelter. This morning at our feeder, I had about 15 AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, and a PILEATED WOODPECKER.

A Polk County sighting was reported by Randy Chaffee in Climax- a male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER came to his feeder on November 23rd. Rick Julian also reported a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at his feeder on the west side of Lake Ida. Other birds seen there included DOWNY WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, BLUE JAY, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, and DARK-EYED JUNCO. On Thanksgiving Day, I saw a small group of SNOW BUNTINGS in Polk County.

Mel and Elaine Bennefeld sighted a BROAD-WINGED HAWK 7 miles west of Ada in Norman County. In Moorhead, Clay County, they found a mature BALD EAGLE patroling the river on Thanksgiving Day.

Gary Otnes in Ottertail County had a HARRIS'S SPARROW at his place on November 22nd. He is hoping the bird will decide to migrate further south soon. Roland Jordahl is still seeing TRUMPETER SWANS near Pelican Rapids- over 40 on the 27th of November. Other birds he reported include GREAT HORNED OWL , ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK by Prairie Lake, immature BALD EAGLES near Maplewood State Park, and an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW in his yard.
