Hotline: Minnesota, Detroit Lakes
This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, December 13,
2002 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.
Birding has been slow this week if the reports are any indication. One
note if interest is the increasing number of mentions of Red-bellied
Woodpeckers in the reports. These birds must be increasing in number and
range. Also, Rick Julian reports that Rydell NWR is having a Christmas
tree harvest this weekend from 10 to 3 each day so folks will be able to
drive out into the refuge and see different areas of the refuge. All
trails will be open- a good opportunity to combine birding with a family
outing.
Gretchen Mehmel reported that she saw a PILEATED WOODPECKER in Roseau
County about 6 miles east of Skime, and there are BLUE JAYS and GRAY
JAYS at the Norris Camp feeder in Lake of the Woods County.
A male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was at our feeder near Thief River Falls ,
Pennington County on December 10th, and a PILEATED WOODPECKER has been
coming from time to time also.
>From Polk County, Donna and Leon Thoreson reported late last week seeing
15 WILD TURKEYS eating in a field north of Climax along Highway 220.
A BROWN CREEPER has been in their yard for over a week now. Other birds
reported by Donna include AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, GREAT
HORNED OWL, and other usual winter residents. Also in Polk County, Randy
Chaffee has RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, BLACK-CAPPED
CHICKADEE, BLUE JAY, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and PURPLE FINCH at his feeders in
Climax. Rick Julian from Rydell National Wildlife Refuge reports many of
the same species and also a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and a BALD EAGLE. RUFFED
GROUSE have been feeding on crabappples by the visitor center. SNOW
BUNTINGS have been seen near the south end of the refuge. The
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER is still coming to the feeder on the west side of
Lake Ida.
A Becker County sighting was reported by Cliff Steinhauer- a RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER is being seen at the cabin of Neal Engbloom on Big Sugarbush
Lake . This lake is located along County Road 143 west from Highway 34.
Mel and Elaine Bennefeld reported 23 TUNDRA SWANS just north of
Moorhead in Clay County on December 12th.
Jeff Schultz reported in from Ottertail County this week. In Ottertail
on December 8th, there were 4 PURPLE FINCHES and a late HARRIS'S SPARROW
at his feeder. In Glendalough State Park on that day he saw a NORTHERN
HARRIER and a female BELTED KINGFISHER actively feeding. Roland Jordahl
is still finding TRUMPETER SWANS near Pelican Rapids. In the backyard he
has MOURNING DOVE, PILEATED WOODPECKER, DOWNY WOODPECKER, HAIRY
WOODPECKER, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, BLUE JAY,
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, and DARK-EYED JUNCO.
Thanks to Gretchen Mehmel, Cliff Steinhauer, Donna and Leon Thoreson,
