This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, February 7, 2003 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

The recent mild weather brought out a few birders in the last week and an increased number of sightings were reported.

A female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was reported by Steve Millard in Fergus Falls, Ottertail County. The bird is still being seen on the "levee" , an open body of water right in town.

To get to the levee: >From 1-94, take exit 57, turn right at the top of the ramp and go about a half mile, then veer left onto County Road 25 which is Cascade Avenue. Stay on Cascade until you reach the stop light at Lincoln Avenue, turn right onto Lincoln. One block later, turn left onto Whitford ( which becomes Friberg). Two blocks later at a 4-way stop at Summit, turn right onto Summit , take the next right and follow this road to the water. The road curves past an area where people feed resident geese and ducks. The Barrow's has been seen in the evenings just to the east of this feeding area. If you need further information, please contact me for Steve's telephone number.

The VARIED THRUSH is still on the campus of Minnesota State University, Moorhead, behind the Comstock Memorial Union near the pre-school playground.

Three GOLDEN EAGLES are being seen at Rothsay Prairie in Wilkin County.

A GREAT GRAY OWL was seen on Saturday, in Roseau County, about 350 yards west of Highway 310 alongside the dike leading west from milepost 9. In the same general area a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was spotted working on a snag. Other birds reported there included GRAY JAY, PILEATED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and several COMMON RAVENS.

Steve Millard reported seeing both RED CROSSBILLS, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in Beltrami Island State Forest in Lake of the Woods County.

An unusual sighting by Steve was a BELTED KINGFISHER at the Lake Bronson Dam in Kittson County.

Pennington County sightings included three COMMON MERGANSERS and a female COMMON GOLDENEYE below the dam in Thief River Falls. Both CEDAR WAXWINGS and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS have been seen recently in Thief River Falls, and Tuesday I saw an AMERICAN ROBIN on my way to work.

Shelley Steva reported a DARK-EYED JUNCO in Plummer, Red Lake County on January 31st.

Other sightings from Ottertail County, in addition to the Barrow's Goldeneye, included 6 HOODED MERGANSERS, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, a recent BROWN THRASHER, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

Grant County sightings called in by Steve Millard, all from the Pine Ridge Park four miles north of Herman, included HERMIT THRUSH, 3 HARRIS'S SPARROWS, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.

Thanks to Steve Millard, Shelley Steva, and Rick Gjervold for their reports.
