This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, January 10, 2003 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.
This is a strange winter in Northwestern Minnesota- we have very little snow and this week the temperatures have been in the forty's all week. That promises to change for the weekend, and already the mercury is dropping fast.
I have four Christmas Bird Counts to report on this week. A late report from the Bemidji CBC, Beltrami County, notes that 8 BALD EAGLES were seen on that one, but no Evening Grosbeaks. Also seen were two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, a TRUMPETER SWAN and a NORTHERN FLICKER.
Two counts were held on the weekend- Baudette and Beltrami Island in the Beltrami Island State Forest , both in Lake of the Woods County.
Highlights of the Baudette CBC held on Friday, January 3, include 16 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 1 BROWN CREEPER, 14 GRAY JAY, 36 BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, 80 BOHEMIAN WAXWING, AND 1164 SNOW BUNTINGS for a total of 22 species. On count week, a GREAT GRAY OWL was seen .6 mile west of the Pitt grade on the Stoney Corners Road.
The Beltrami Island CBC on January 4th produced 19 species. While we did not have huge numbers, the species seen were interesting. Highlights included RUFFED GROUSE, BARRED OWL, PILEATED WOODPECKER, 3 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, 9 BOREAL CHICKADEES, 19 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 4 WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 8 PINE GROSBEAK, 21 RED CROSSBILL, 37 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, 6 PINE SISKIN, and 12 AMERICAN GOLDFINCH.
A Marshall County report from Lori Becker at the Wetlands, Pines, and Prairies Audubon Sanctuary near Warren lists a SHORT-EARED OWL seen at dusk on the sanctuary road, and an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW at the visitor center. Highlights of the Warren CBC held in late December included a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 1 MERLIN, 10 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, 1 MOURNING DOVE, a GREAT HORNED OWL, 1 NORTHERN FLICKER, 27 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 4 CEDAR WAXWINGS, 1 DARK-EYED JUNCO , 1 SNOW BUNTING (!), and 2 NORTHERN CARDINALS.
In Thief River Falls, Pennington County, Steve Tsukichi reports that 20 MOURNING DOVES are coming to his feeder regularly. At our feeder near Thief River Falls, we have 6 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, and at various times during the last week we have had both BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and CEDAR WAXWINGS in the yard.
Joe Gartner saw a GREAT BLUE HERON , and a flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS along the Sandhill River by the nature center in the Fertile Sandhills in southern Polk County.
Joe also reports a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at his bird feeders in Hawley, Clay County.
Thanks to Joe Gartner, Lori Becker, Katie Haws, and Steve Tsukichi for their reports.
