Two cross-border Christmas Bird Counts found interesting birds in Minnesota this week. The Grand Forks-East Grand Forks CBC reported a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Polk County along the Red River south of the East Grand Forks wastewater treatment ponds, but no one has been able to relocate the bird, so it is assumed that it moved on. The Fargo- Moorhead CBC found an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL in north Moorhead. Of note is the fact that none of the reporting counts has included any of the winter finches. They are really scarce this year so anyone who sees any, please report them.
In Marshall County Zeann Linder and I had the good fortune to witness a SNOWY OWL catching his supper at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge. The bird was seen flying over Headquarters Pool adjacent to Marshall County Road 7.
The Fergus Falls CBC in Ottertail County was held on December 14. Forty-three species were found. The best bird was a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. Other bird included GREAT BLUE HERON, NORTHERN PINTAIL, REDHEAD, AMERICAN COOT, BELTED KINGFISHER, HARRIS'S SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and during count week SNOW GOOSE, AMERICAN KESTREL, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW . Record numbers of NORTHERN CARDINALS and AMERICAN ROBINS were recorded. Also in Ottertail County, Alma Ronningen reported DOWNY WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, BLUE JAY, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, and DARK-EYED JUNCO at their feeder. Teresa Jaskiewicz reported from Elizabeth sightings of immature HARRIS'S SPARROW, and HOUSE FINCH in addition to many of the birds mentioned earlier.
Kay Hartness in Becker County saw 11 TRUMPETER SWANS fly over her house. She also reported a BALD EAGLE, RUFFED GROUSE, NORTHERN SHRIKE, BROWN CREEPER, and a dozen AMERICAN GOLDFINCH.
Clay County birds included in the Fargo-Moorhead CBC were several waterfowl at the wastewater treatment ponds north of Moorhead- NORTHERN PINTAIL, BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, and WOOD DUCK.
Lori Becker at the Wetlands, Pines, and Prairies Audubon Sanctuary in northern Polk County reported that nothing unusual had been seen at the sanctuary except the usual winter residents- chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers and BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE.
The Bemidji CBC in Beltrami County was held on December 14. Doug Johnson reports that a late TRUMPETER SWAN was found on the Mississippi River. 4 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 8 BALD EAGLES, a NORTHERN FLICKER, GRAY JAY, BROWN CREEPER, BOHEMIAN WAXWING, CEDAR WAXWING, and AMERICAN TREE SPARROW were also found.
Thanks to Kay Hartness, Doug Johnson, Alma Ronningen, Teresa Jaskiewicz, Eddy Edwards, Lori Becker, and Dave Lambeth for their reports.
