This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, February 21, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Though winter returned in the past couple of days, there were signs of spring earlier in the week. The number of gulls at the Superior landfill has been decreasing. This week there were about 500 HERRING GULLS, 16 GLAUCOUS GULLS, 6 THAYER'S GULLS, and 1 adult ICELAND GULL. There is also a second-year RING-BILLED GULL in the area.

Frank Nicoletti and Dave Carman began counting migrating raptors in West Duluth on the 17th, when 18 BALD EAGLES and 6 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were counted. On the 18th, they tallied 43 BALD EAGLES, plus new early Duluth migration dates for three other species: COOPER'S HAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and GOLDEN EAGLE.

One LONG-TAILED DUCK and three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were again seen this week in the harbor. The NORTHERN HAWK OWL on Jean Duluth Rd at the St. Louis Cty Highway Dept. was seen again as recently as the 18th. A pair of courting MERLINS was reported from 19th Ave E and 1st Street.

As many as six BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen at various points along St. Louis Cty Rd 16 from 2.5 miles west of the jct with 110 to 2.2 miles east of that jct. GREAT GRAY OWLS were seen on the 16th just east of the jct of 16 and 110 and 2.6 miles west of the same intersection. BOREAL CHICKADEES have also been reported from Cty Rd 16.

Further from Duluth, a flock of about 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS has been in Grand Marais, as recently as the 18th. On the Gunflint Trail, a pair of NORTHERN HAWK OWLS was near the Gunflint Pines Resort (on Cty Rd 50), and a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was reported from the parking lot of Gunflint Northwoods Outfitters near the end of the trail.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, February 28. The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.

The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU) as a service to its members.
