This is the Duluth Birding Report for February 28, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen at several locations this week, including on Cty Rd 16, 2.4 miles west of 110, and in the Sax-Zim Bog area, along Cty Road 319 a half-mile from Cty Rd 7, and on Cty Rd 7 two miles south of 319. There were also Black-backeds in Lake Cty, on Cty Rd 2, a half-mile south of Greenwood Lake, and on Hwy 1 at the Isabella Ranger Station.
Two HOARY REDPOLLS were coming to Don Kienholz's feeder in Duluth. Karen Sussman saw a SNOWY OWL just east of the Sax Zim bog on February 23. The bird was along the East side of Hwy 53 near the "town" of Central Lakes (mile marker 48). Another Snowy Owl was seen on Lake County Rd 9 a mile east of the St. Louis/Lake Cty line.
The return of winter brought large numbers of gulls back to the Superior Landfill. On the 25th,1350 HERRING GULLS, 16 GLAUCOUS GULLS, 4 THAYER'S GULLS, and 1 ICELAND GULL were present. Chris Mansfield reported 3 GLAUCOUS GULLS at Canal Park in Duluth on the same day. She also saw a flock of 40 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at the jct. of Howard Gnesen Rd and Calvary Road on the 24th.
Dave Carman had an immature SHARP-SHINNED HAWK this week at the West Skyline Hawk-watch. The NORTHERN HAWK OWL on Jean Duluth Road was still present on the 25th.
