In St. Louis County, Karen Sussman saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on March 2nd. It was atop an aspen tree approximately one-quarter mile south of the junction of state highway 133 and U.S. highway 53.
Roger Schroeder found two ROSS'S GEESE on March 2nd at Split Rock Creek State Park in Pipestone County. Another Ross's Goose was seen on the 4th just south of state highway 7 at Reigh Lake on the Carver - McLeod county line. And Craig Mandel found a Ross's Goose at Bergdahl Lake in the northeast corner of Watonwan County on the 5th.
On March 7th, Fred Lesher observed a single LESSER YELLOWLEGS in Houston County about 100 yards west of highway 26, near the ponds south of the town of Reno. Also on the 7th Ken LaFond reported a Lesser Yellowlegs from Wright County about two miles east of the town of Buffalo.
On March 5, Carolyn Hegland and Noel Benson observed a partially albibistic redpoll -- probably a Common -- in a flock of 200-300 COMMON REDPOLLS at a feeding station on the southeast corner of Grace Lake near Bemidji. This is the second report of an unusually pale Common Redpoll that I have received this year.
A SNOWY OWL was seen March 6th on the southwest side of the Minnesota River along Cedar Ave. atop the first light pole between the power lines and the river.
And the VARIED THRUSH in Shoreview near Turtle Lake in Ramsey County is still present. The bird is visiting a feeder at the home of Gordon Hinchcliffe.
On March 6th there was a LONG-TAILED DUCK at the Bass Ponds in Minneapolis, Hennepin County.
From Black Dog Lake in Dakota County, Dan Bera reported AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, all on the 6th.
In Meeker County on the 4th Dan Floren reported both HARRIS'S SPARROW and SONG SPARROW at Pipenberg Park, and a well described CHIPPING SPARROW was at Swan Lake County Park. Song Sparrows were also seen by Julie Brophy near Kelser Pond in Victoria, Carver County, on the 7th.
Among the many additional reports I've received are several species of waterfowl, including hundreds of GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and SNOW GEESE across the southern half of the state from Big Stone County in the west to Washington County in the east, plus SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, KILLDEER, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, AMERICAN COOT, SANDHILL CRANE, and EASTERN BLUEBIRD.
Thanks to Julie Peterson, Jon Peterson, Barb Kull, and Dave Cahlander.
