This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 23rd, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

In Lac Qui Parle County at the East Pool of Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge were 16 HUDSONIAN GODWITS and several BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS on August 22nd. Quite unusual was the GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE seen here on the 19th.

Among the 19 species of shorebirds recorded in Big Stone County on the 22nd was that PIPING PLOVER, still in the flooded field at County Road 61 and Highway 28 along with four AMERICAN AVOCETS. Two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were here on the 19th. At the Clinton sewage lagoons were more than 90 WILSON'S PHALAROPES and five RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.

Three Red-necked Phalaropes were at the Winthrop sewage ponds in Sibley County on the 17th.

I have a belated report of a RED KNOT seen at Lake Byllesby in Dakota County on the 15th.

A juvenile LITTLE BLUE HERON can still be seen at Carver Park in western Hennepin County. It has frequented the shore of Crosby Lake just west of the Nature Center since the 16th.

Several CATTLE EGRETS continue to be seen on the west side of Minnesota Lake in Faribault County. They were reported here as recently as August 21st.

Many warblers have been moving southward through the state. At Cedar Lake in Minneapolis 15 species were found on the 19th, including BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and NORTHERN PARULA.
