This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, October 25th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
I have a second-hand report of a WHITE-EYED VIREO found on the 25th at the Lutsen Sea Villas in Cook County. The bird was apparently seen around a foot bridge 10 to 15 yards from the parking area, and near a large building. The vireo appears to be a first-winter individual with a dark eye.
Peder Svingen As recently as October 23rd, the BLACK-HEADED GULL was still on the north side of Jackson County road 2 where it bisects Spirit Lake. This bird has been seen near this location since September 25th.
Both THAYER'S GULL and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL have been seen on Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis for the past several days. A WESTERN GREBE is also still in attendance.
On the 22nd a BLACK SCOTER was reported from Waken Bay on Mille Lacs Lake in Mille Lacs County.
The season's first SNOWY OWL was found at Zippel Bay State Park in northwestern Lake of the Woods County on the 23rd. The injured bird was taken to the University of Minnesota Raptor Center.
A ROSS'S GOOSE was on Lake George in Rochester, Olmsted County on the 17th. From U.S. highway 52 south, exit onto 16th Street Southwest and go right. Turn right on Greenview Drive and drive to the IBM MidAmerica Employees Credit Union at 1698 Greenview Drive SW. Walk from here to the lake.
WILD TURKEYS were in Blue Mounds State Park, Rock County on the 20th.
SMITH'S LONGSPURS were seen on the 23rd in Cottonwood County. From the intersection of Cottonwood County roads 10 and 45, go south on 45 for two miles. Look in the field on the east side of the road.
A SPOTTED TOWHEE is coming to a feeder in Rochester, Olmsted County. From U.S. highway 52 go west on county road 25. Turn right onto Fox Valley Drive. Look for 1972 Fox Valley Drive on the south side of the street. Visitors are asked to not enter the yard.
Julie Brophy had an EASTERN TOWHEE visit her feeder in Victoria, Carver County on the 19th. Also reported in the state recently were TUNDRA SWAN, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SNOW BUNTING, PURPLE FINCH, and PINE SISKIN.
