This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday September 12th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Frank Nicoletti reported an immature MISSISSIPPI KITE over Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve on the morning of September 9th. This is the fourth record for this species at the ridge. For updates on the hawk migration and other birding news, you can call the Duluth birding report at 218-525-5952.
Ray Glassel found two adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at Black Dog Lake on September 12th. This may be the earliest date on record for this once extremely rare Minnesota visitor.
On September 7th Bob Ekblad discovered a HUDSONIAN GODWIT at the north end of Silver Creek Reservoir, east of Rochester in Olmsted County. Also present there were several AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, SANDERLINGS and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS. A SANDERLING was also seen along the lake shore north of the town of Gaylord in Sibley County on September 5th. 15 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS were at Sunset Pond near Burnsville in Dakota County on the 9th. Craig menze found two BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS near the recreation area of Park Point in Duluth on the 14th.
Migrating RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS visited Julie Brophy's oriole feeder in Burnsville, Dakota County. Warblers are moving as well. Bob Janssen found a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER on September 6th near Mound Lake, west of the town of Upsula in Todd County. Carol Schumacher reported a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER on September 9th at Prairie Island in Winona County. Other warblers being reported from across the state include AMERICAN REDSTART, NORTHERN PARULA and OVENBIRD plus BLACK- AND-WHITE, YELLOW-RUMPED, TENNESSEE, NASHVILLE, ORANGE- CROWNED, BLACKBURNIAN, BLACKPOLL, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, MAGNOLIA, CHESTNUT-SIDED, BAY-BREASTED and WILSON'S WARBLERS.
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continue to be reported this fall. A flock was seen on September 1st near the town of Winton in St. Louis County, and Joe Miller found them in Minneapolis near Nicollet Ave and 7th Street on the 11th.
