This is the Minnesota statewide birding report for Thursday June 18th
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Dennis Kuecherer and Fred Lesher observed two MISSISSIPPI KITES on
Houston County Rd 5. From the town of Caledonia take County Road 5 south
for approximately 10 miles to the Winnebago Campground. When you reach
the road to the campground, proceed another two tenths of a mile farther
east on County Road 5. The birds were seen here on June 12th.
An adult MISSISSIPPI KITE was reported on the 13th by Ray Kellman along
state highway 65 one mile north of Kanabec County Road 3. This adult bird
was seen flying north along the highway and soon disappeared.
Interesting is the report of a BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK in Steele
County, first seen May 18th and again on June 12th. Unfortunately, the
directions were unclear, given as being just north of highway 30 about a
mile off Interstate 35.
And that BEWICK'S WREN found in Sherburne County last May is still at the
Camp in the Woods campground. From U.S. highway 169 go west on Sherburne
County Road 9 for about 2 1/4 miles. Go south on 144th Street for 1/2 mile
to 289th Ave. Take this road west to the Camp in the Woods sign on the
left. Check the pines in the campground and along the road.
Peder Svingen spotted a CLARK'S GREBE on Lake Osakis on June 15th. He
found it northwest of Black's Resort, which is located just east of the
cemetery on the eastern edge of the town of Osakis in Todd County.
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found in Mora, Kanabec Co. by Craig Menze on
the 3rd. The bird is at the Trail View Elementary School. Directions are
from the stop lights on Hwy 65 in Mora. Go .7 miles north to 9th street.
Take a left and go west to the school. The bird is hanging around near the
batting cages just west of the parking lot. Do not cross the fence beyond
the ball field as this is private property.
On the 17th Deanne Endrizzi reported an immature LITTLE BLUE HERON was
seen at Peterson Pond at the Minnesota Valley National Valley Wildlife
Refuge in Hennepin Co. The bird, which is mostly white, is visible from
the wooden observation deck at the base of the Hillside Trail.
A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was reported by Jim Schultz from O.L. Kipp State
Park in Winona County on the 15th. This was at the end of the nature
trail leading to King's Bluff. And late migrants include a BLACK-THROATED
GREEN WARBLER and a BLACKPOLL WARBLER, both seen by Barb Muldenhauer on
June 12th at Elm Creek Regional Park in Brooklyn Park.
