This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday October 1st sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Steve Roman found a female LARK BUNTING on September 28th at the 40th Ave. West impoundment area in Duluth. The bird was seen feeding along the dirt road on the east end of the dike. Several SMITH'S LONGSPUR were seen in the same area, along with LAPLAND LONGSPURS and numerous species of sparrows. Despite extensive searches over the next two days, the bunting could not be refound. Also in Duluth a variety of unusual birds have been reported from the recreation area of Park Point. These include a RED-THROATED LOON on the 30th, a BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE on the 26th, and several PARASITIC JAEGERS and a possible POMARINE JAEGER also on the 26th. Elsewhere, Jon Peterson had a MISSISSIPPI KITE pass over his home along the Mississippi River in the town of Reads Landing in Wabasha County on September 25th.

A male SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was seen on the 29th in front of the Holiday Gas Station in the town of Tofte, Cook County by Dory Spence, but the bird was apparently gone by the following morning.

In Rochester, Olmsted County, a CAROLINA WREN was seen again at Leslie Kotkke's feeder on September 30th. Please call Leslie before visiting. A second CAROLINA WREN was seen at Interstate Park in Chisago County. The wren was seen on the 26th on Folsum island in the St. Croix River.

On September 30th, Paul Budde reported a THAYER'S GULL on Lake Calhoun in Mpls. And on Monday September 28th, Jeanie Joppru had a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER visit her yard in Thief River Falls, Pennington County.
