This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday July 1st sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Dan Floren reports that a CLARK'S GREBE was seen again June 29th on Long Lake south of the town of Grove City in Meeker County.
Betsy Beneke reported a PRAIRIE FALCON on the 24th in Norman County. This was along a minimum maintenance road two miles west and 1.5 miles south of the town of Lockhart.
Jane Wicklund found a COMMON MOORHEN June 23rd along Washington County road 7 near county road 55. This is about six miles north then two and a half miles east of state highway 96.
Fall migrant LESSER YELLOWLEGS have been reported from several counties this past week, including Grant, Becker, Meeker, and McLeod.
On the 28th a SHORT-EARED OWL was seen by Jeanie Joppru in a field along U.S. highway 59 just south of Lancaster, Kittson County. On the 27th another Kittson County Short-eared Owl was found by Peder Svingen along County Road 15 approximately three miles north of the town of Lake Bronson.
A HENSLOW'S SPARROW was found by Cole Foster at Afton State Park in Washington County. From the entrance road, just before the parking area take the dirt road leading to the group camps. A short distance down this road look for the grass hiking trail on the right. This trail passes a large grassy field where the bird was found singing on June 27th.
Other reports include a COMMON LOON seen by Mark Ochs in Rosemount in Dakota County just east of state highway 3; and a couple of LEAST BITTERNS, reported by Gordon Anderson from the Wood Lake Nature Center in Richfield on June 18th and again on the 30th by Lane Elwanger. These birds are typically found along the boardwalk in the west part of the park.
