This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday December 9th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

On December 4th the previously reported GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL was still in Grand Marais on the outer breakwall at the west side of the harbor. The female KING EIDER which has been in the same general area was last reported December 9th at mile marker 116 of highway 61 north of Grand Marais. Three HARLEQUIN DUCKS were in the Grand Marais harbor also on December 9th.

The winter's first CAROLINA WREN showed up at the feeder of Eddie Edwards on November 21st and it has remained at least through the 5th of December. This is in the town of Battle Lake in Otter Tail County.

An immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK was reported from the Bryn Mar area of south Minneapolis on December 2nd.

A LONG-TAILED DUCK was reported December 2nd on northwest side of Cottonwood Lake in Lyon County near the town of Cottonwood. And a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen December 4th and 6th at the campus of General Mills on I-394 and General Mills Blvd.

On Mille Lacs lake a total of 721 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were counted on the 6th. In addition, 184 TUNDRA SWANS were seen from various points around the lake, and a single SURF SCOTER was at Wahkon Bay in Mille Lacs Co.on the same day. Oscar Johnson found 29 Tundra Swans on Diamond Lake in northwestern Hennepin County on the 7th.

As many as 200 SANDHILL CRANES were still at Sherburne NWR in Sherburne County on November 27th, and a single Sandhill was seen December 4th in Stearns County on North Lake near the town of Albany.

Michael North observed an adult SNOWY OWL on December 2nd and again on the 6th in southern Cass Co. This was along state highway 210 near the Hengel's gravel pit.

On December 2nd a late NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found by Dave Brown just northeast of the town of Elk River. This is near where Sherburne County borders both Isanti and Anoka counties.

Unusual was the very late WILSON'S WARBLER reported December 3rd on the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota. It was seen between the Gortner Lab Building and the Ecology Building by Stuart Wagenius.

A HOARY REDPOLL is among about 35 COMMON REDPOLLS being seen at the Tamarac NWR headquarters in Becker County. These birds were reported as recently as December 7th.
