This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday, August 24, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

I have an unconfirmed report of a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD coming to the feeders at the HQ building at Bronson State Park, in Kittson county. This bird has apparently been present for the past 3 weeks, but I have no further information.

Those two SNOWY EGRETS were still at the Mississippi River in South St. Paul as recently as August 22. This location is just NW of the Maxwell Ave exit off of I-494.

A WHIMBREL was seen briefly in Duluth on August 22 near the recreation area of Park Point in St. Louis county. You can call the Duluth bird report at (218) 525-5952 for more information on this and other birds in the NE part of the state.

BUFF BREASTED SANDPIPERS are being reported in very good numbers from all over. A few have been seen at Park Point in Duluth and one was also present at the 40th Ave mud flats. BUFF BREASTED SANDPIPERS were also in Chisago county on August 22 and Carver county on August 23. Other migrating shorebirds reported recently include KILLDEER, BLACK-BELLIED, LESSER GOLDEN and SEMI-PALMATED PLOVERS, both YELLOWLEGS, STILT, BAIRD'S, SOLITARY, PECTORAL and SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPERS and COMMON SNIPE. Places to look for SHOREBIRDS include the ponds west of New Germany along Carver CR 30; in Lino Lakes you can try the sod farms along CR 14; there are the Blaine soccer fields in Anoka county; the sod farms situated one mile north and one mile east of North Branch in Chisago county; and in Carver county try the sod farms at the intersection of CR 10 and 30.

WESTERN KINGBIRDS have been reported from many areas. Birds have been reported from Freeborn, Hennepin and Washington counties.

A TUFTED TITMOUSE has been coming to Kikki Sonnen's feeder in Frontenac. This is on CR 2 near CR 5, in Goodhue county.

RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES are making an early appearance in the southern half of the state. Birds have been reported from Ramsey county on August 21 and in Hennepin county on August 19.

The male HOODED WARBLER is still being seen at the east end of Robert's Sanctuary in south Mpls. It was reported as recently as August 23.

The spotted race of the RUFOUS SIDED TOWHEE was reported on Friday, August 18 in the Rush River Wayside Rest in Sibley county about 2 miles SW of the town of Henderson. This sighting is interesting since this race is expected to split from the RUFOUS SIDED TOWHEE in the near future.

Additional migrating species include, CASPIAN TERN, SANDHILL CRANE, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, RUBY THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, OLIVE SIDED FLYCATCHER, RED-EYED, SOLITARY and WARBLING VIREO plus MOURNING, WILSON'S, CHESTNUT SIDED and YELLOW WARBLER.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, August 31. If you have birds to report, please leave your name, phone number and a brief, but specific message.
