No doubt the heat, humidity and frequent storms northwest Minnesota has been experiencing this past week have made birding a LITTLE more challenging! Many thanks to those die-hard birders who shared information for this report.
The shorebird action at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall County is increasing, with 16 species and over 1700 individuals recorded by Peder Svingen on the 14th and 15th. Included in the counts were: one AMERICAN AVOCET, greater and lesser yellowlegs, solitary, spotted, semipalmated, least, Baird's, pectoral and stilt sandpipers, marbled godwit, short-billed dowitcher, common snipe, American woodcock and Wilson's phalarope.
Mary Broten reported from Old Mill State Park, also in Marshall County. Visitors provided a list of birds seen that included: Broad-winged hawk, ruffed grouse, gray catbird, cedar waxwing, yellow-throated vireo, yellow-rumped warbler and rose-breasted grosbeak.
At the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge in Becker County, birds seen include red-necked grebes with young, least bittern, turkey vulture, trumpeter swans with cygnets, adult and juvenile bald eagles, Forster's and black terns, black-billed cuckoo, barred owl, warbling vireo, marsh and sedge wrens, evening grosbeak and ten warbler species including golden-winged, yellow-rumped, black-throated green, pine and mourning.
Other birds reported in Becker County this past week include Cooper's hawk, yellow-billed cuckoo, common nighthawk, chimney swift, red-bellied woodpecker, alder flycatcher, Eastern bluebird, scarlet tanager, northern cardinal, indigo bunting, Baltimore oriole and purple finch.
