This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, January 16, 2003, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Jim Lind reported a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 15th in the Sax-Zim bog on Cty Rd 207 (Stickney Rd), about 300 yards north of CR 52 (Arkola Rd.). And two Great Grays were seen on Cty Rd 7, 2 - 3/4 miles north of Sax on the 11th. In Aitkin Cty, Warren Nelson found another Great Gray along Cty Rd 18 about 3.1 miles east of Highway 169 on the 11th.

Deborah Buria-Falkowski reported two GREAT BLUE HERONS northeast of Manganika Lake, which is two miles south of Virginia in northern St. Louis Cty on the 13th.

The THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was seen again over the weekend on the Spruce Rd, 0.6 north of Hwy 1. SPRUCE GROUSE (2) were seen one mile north of the Sand River on Cty Rd 2 and on Hwy 1 at mile marker 301. BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in Two Harbors over the weekend, and I saw a large flock fly by 15th Ave East in Duluth on the 14th.

In Two Harbors, the RUSTY BLACKBIRD wintering there was still present on 3rd and 2nd over the weekend. And the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was still hanging on in a small berry tree near the base of the breakwater at Agate Bay.

Mike Hendrickson reported that a dead hummingbird, apparently a Ruby-throated, was found in a bus shelter in downtown Duluth this week.
