This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, January 30th, 2003, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A male BALTIMORE ORIOLE has been coming to a jelly-feeder in Silver Bay. Carol Tveekrem, who reported the oriole, had a BROWN THRASHER at her feeder in Schroeder on the 26th.
Jan Green saw a whitish, arctic subspecies GREAT HORNED OWL on Cty Hwy 61, 0.5 mile east of Knife River on the 26th. The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Two Harbors was seen again in the Agate Bay area on the 25th.
Tom Auer reported a GREAT GRAY OWL and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on Cty Rd 319 (Stone Lake Rd) in the Sax-Zim area on the 25th. Warren Nelson reported another Great Gray on Aitkin Cty Rd 18, 0.25 miles west of Pietz's Rd (2.25 miles west of the jct. with Cty Rd 5). Steve Blanich reported that Crosby and Ironton are full of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS.
