This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 21st, 2014 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Erik Collins saw an adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL and a flock of 20 LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 17th at Knife Island in Knife River. Erik also saw a flock of 150 LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 18th at Lighthouse Point in Two Harbors, and scattered smaller flocks near Two Harbors.
Bill Tefft saw a flock of 35 BOHEMIAN WAXINGS on the 14th in Ely along East Washington Street near the bowling alley.
Signs of spring are tough to come by lately, but Terry Wiens reported the first AMERICAN KESTREL of the season on the 14th at Lake Superior College. Terry also saw a TRUMPETER SWAN on the 17th on the St. Louis River upstream from the Fond Du Lac bridge. David Brislance saw a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL in Lutsen on the 15th, and one was heard calling west of Two Harbors on the 17th.
