This is the Duluth Birding Report for April 4th, 2014 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Karl Bardon saw 96 LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 2nd at Brighton Beach in east Duluth. Bryan French saw a CANVASBACK on March 29th in the Duluth Harbor.

Dee Kuder saw two female SPRUCE GROUSE on the 2nd north of the town of Cook along Beatty Road and St. Louis County Road 24.

Spring raptor migration is underway, with 742 BALD EAGLES and ten GOLDEN EAGLES counted on March 29th and 30th at the West Skyline Hawk Count in Duluth. Small numbers of SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, RED-TAILED HAWKS, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, NORTHERN HARRIER, MERLIN and AMERICAN KESTREL were also seen.

Other recent spring arrivals in the past week include HOODED MERGANSER, GREAT BLUE HERON, AMERICAN ROBIN, and DARK-EYED JUNCO.
