This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, September 6th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

On the afternoon of September 5th, Tom Ramsay reported a LONG-TAILED JAEGER on the St. Croix River just east of the Bayport power plant near Stillwater, Washington County, and it was relocated just south of here on the 6th. The jaeger was first seen from a boat about midway between the Minnesota and Wisconsin shores. It flew around the back of the boat then headed toward the power plant on the Minnesota side. There are only seven records of the Long-tailed Jaeger in Minnesota dating back to 1898, and this would be the first since 1981.

A CAROLINA WREN was found on September 2nd along Dobbins Creek in northeast Austin, Mower County. Dobbins Creek is west of the Hormel Nature Center. From 21st St. NE and 12th Ave. NE, go west to 19th St. Turn left on 19th and drive to house number 1201. Permission has been granted by the home owner for visitors to investigate the creek behind the house.

On the 2nd, Jon Little found a single RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at the East Landfill Reservoir, northwest of Rochester, Olmsted County.

On September 4rd, Craig Menze found the first LAPLAND LONGSPUR of the fall season near Mora in Kanabec County. On the 3rd, he reported a good variety of warblers migrating through, including CAPE MAY WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, and GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER. A male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER has been seen at the nearby Roberts Sanctuary in Minneapolis each day since September 1st. Chet Meyers is also reporting good numbers of warblers from Cedar Lake in Minneapolis, finding among them PALM WARBLER and BLACKPOLL WARBLER.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, September 13th.
