This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday July 15th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Two LEAST BITTERNS were still at Wood Lake Nature Center in Hennepin County on July 11th as reported by Mike Gerard.
At the Wabasha/Winona county line at the area known as the Weaver Bottoms the following shorebirds were reported: KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER, and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. All these birds were reported by Chris Wood on July 13th. From Meeker County the following species can be added to this list: WILLET, MARBLED GODWIT, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, and WILSON'S PHALAROPE. And on July 12th Sylvia Winkleman reported many SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS at the Watkins sewege ponds in Stearns County, west of highway 2 on 143rd street.
Becky Mellentin has had at least two NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS in her northeast Minneapolis yard since July 11th. Please call Becky before visiting.
Unusual was the Minnetonka, Hennepin County report by Tom Brokl of a BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER which has been visiting his yard since June 14th. And Bob Dunlop saw two HOODED WARBLERS at Carver Park in Carver County on July 11th.
I have a second-hand report of a LARK BUNTING seen at the Cedar Rock State Wildlife Management Area in Redwood County on the 9th.
On July 11th Bill Marengo found a HENSLOW'S SPARROW near the town of Jordan in Scott County. From the junction of U.S. highway 169 and Scott County Road 9 drive north a few hundred feet then west on to Scott County Road 57. Go one mile and turn north on to Beaumont Avenue. Go about a quarter of a mile and look to the west about 50 yards from the road.
Bob Janssen reported a juvenile BLUE GROSBEAK along Dakota County Road 73 on the 12th. The specific location was one mile south of Dakota County Road 32 on the west side of County Road 73 just south of mail box #l2637.
