This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday December 16th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The best bird of the week is the male VARIED THRUSH seen in Shoreview near Turtle Lake in Ramsey County. The bird is visiting a feeder at the home of Gordon Hinchcliffe and it has been present since the 7th.

Three HARLEQUIN DUCKS were still in the Grand Marais harbor in Cook County on December 14th, and a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was on the lake just north of town on the 13th. A White-winged Scoter was on Mille Lacs Lake in Mille Lacs County on December 13th near Wahkon Bay on the southeast side, and a LONG-TAILED DUCK was at Wigwam Bay on the west side.

A late GRAY CATBIRD was at a feeder in Shorewood, Hennepin County on the 11th, and two late KILLDEER were seen on the same day in Lakeville, Dakota County. Most unusual was the report of a YELLOW WARBLER at the north end of Hamden Slough in Becker County on December 7th. The previous latest date on record for this species is October 22nd. And a late male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen along Renville County Road 11 on December 15th. Robert Schroeder first found this bird on December 4th. This location is southwest of the town of Hutchinson along Renville County Road 11, 10.6 miles west of Highway 15.

I have two GOLDEN EAGLE reports. One was observed in south-central Minnesota from Collinwood Township just south of Lake Washington in Meeker County on the 10th, and the other was seen on the 12th near the town of Weaver on the Mississippi River in Wabasha County.

BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and winter finches are making a good showing across the northern half of Minnesota, and I have reports of EVENING GROSBEAK, PINE GROSBEAK, RED CROSSBILL, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL from several localities, especially Kandiyohi County. As well, a few White-winged Crossbills and many COMMON REDPOLLS have now reached the southern parts of the state.

Other birds being reported by callers over the past week include AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, CEDAR WAXWING, and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH.

This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday December 23rd sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

An adult MEW GULL was reported on the Bloomington Christmas Bird Count at Black Dog Lake in Dakota County. The bird was seen in the mid-morning on the 18th near the observation deck, but despite extensive searches later that day and the following week there was only one possible second observation. If I hear of this potential fourth state record being seen again I will update this tape immedately.

John Hockema found two SHORT-EARED OWLS in Olmsted County on December 21st. Directions were to drive south from Rochester on County Road 1 to 80th St. SE, and turn left. Ken LaFond found a GREAT GRAY OWL in Beltrami County on the 17th. This was about seven miles north of Kelliher along highway 72 halfway between mile markers 26 and 27. There is a report of a possible SNOWY OWL in Roseville near the Roselawn Cemetery along Victoria Street from December 16th. And a NORTHERN HAWK OWL is being seen west of the town of Biwabik in St. Louis County, but I have no specific directions.

A TUFTED TITMOUSE has been coming to a feeder in the town of Woodbury in Washington County since December 19th.

A CAROLINA WREN is still being seen at the feeder of Eddie Edwards where it has been since November 21st. It was seen as recently as the 22nd of December in the town of Battle Lake in Otter Tail County.

And a HOARY REDPOLL was seen in with a group of COMMON REDPOLLS on the 18th at a feeder along NE Washington Ave. near Andover Dr. in Ham Lake, Anoka County.
