As with the above Say's Phoebe record (2002-44), a record's documentation is always strengthened if field notes on the bird's appearance are written before the observer looks at any references. A field sketch, no matter how crude, is also recommended. When consulting a field guide first, it becomes too easy to end up describing what the bird looked like in the book (i.e., what it should have looked like), rather than describing the actual appearance of the bird in the field. An adult was found singing on top of a pile of rocks in a quarry 8 May, and it, or another adult, was subsequently observed carrying nesting material. Two adults were reported in early June and both adults were documented with four recentlyfledged young on 17 July. Full details of this first Minnesota breeding record will be published in The Loon.
