This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, September 27th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On September 23rd, Roger Schroeder reported a MISSISSIPPI KITE at Brawner Lake in Camden State Park, Lyon County. It was seen at the tree line at the southwest shore of the lake but soon departed the area and could not be relocated. At the same location Roger also reported the first TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE of the season.
Unusual was the SPRAGUE'S PIPIT reported from Resurrection Cemetery in Eagan, Dakota County on the 21st and again on the 22nd. Reports of this bird did not get to me until several days later when it had apparently already departed.
On September 21st Herb Dingmann found a SABINE'S GULL at the Paynesville sewage ponds in Stearns County but it soon disappeared and was not refound. At the time it was associating with a large group of FRANKLIN'S GULLS.
In Duluth over the weekend the following species were found on Lake Superior at various locations along Park Point: Three SABINE'S GULLS at Wisconsin Point on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin side of the border; An alternate plumage RED-THROATED LOON, seen at the Recreation Area; A PACIFIC LOON found at 31st St.; A PARASITIC JAEGER at the Recreation Area and at Wisconsin Point; And an unidentified dark morph juvenile jaeger at 12th St. and at Wisconsin Point.
Paul Budde found an adult THAYER'S GULL on Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis on the 23rd.
Chris Benson reports that on September 22nd, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were all at Walnut Lake Wildlife Management Area in Faribault County, and a pair of MUTE SWANS was at the intersection of state highway 22 and Blue Earth County Road 3. And on the 23rd, he found a NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW at the East Landfill Reservoir in Olmsted County.
A few callers reported RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS. One was seen September 23rd at Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge near the head of the Blue Hill Trail. Also at Sherburne a family of Red-headed Woodpeckers has been frequenting at the Stickney Pool area since September 8th. And a pair can be seen in the town of Isanti in Isanti County near the junction of 285th and Potassium.
Other migrants seen around the state include RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, PALM WARBLER, FOX SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and PURPLE FINCH.
