This is the Minnesota statewide birding report for Thursday July 9th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Joe Miller spotted a MISSISSIPPI KITE near Valley Fair near Shakopee in Scott County on July 2nd. This is the seventh report this year of this normally Casual species.

Peder Svingen found a FERRUGINOUS HAWK at the Felton Prairie in Clay County on July 6th. This was east of the longspur road and between the two cattle guards. The longspur road is a dirt road that runs north of Clay County road 26 about two miles west of county road 27.

Al Batt reports three LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES in section 30 of Manchester Township in Freeborne County. This was on July 5th. On the 6th, Oscar Johnson found two LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES in Sherburne County along 70th Ave., three-tenths of a mile north of county road 8.

On July 3rd and again on the 4th, Jeanie Joppru heard a TENNESSEE WARBLER singing in her Thief River Falls yard in Pennington County. This is a just bit southwest of the warbler's typical range.

And shorebirds are now being reported in the state as they pass through on their fall migration. On July 5th, Lane Elwanger reported several species at a wildlife management area at the intersection of Big Stone County road 25 and 10. These included LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER.

A BLUE GROSBEAK was found by Doug Shepard on July 9th in Lincoln County, about a mile northwest of Lake Benton.

To update a few of the more interesting species still being found in Minnesota, a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT is still being seen at Great River Bluffs State Park, formerly known as O. L. Kipp State park, in Winona County. Carol Schumacher refound the bird at the end of the King's Bluff Trail where it was first reported on June 15th.

That BEWICK'S WREN found in Sherburne County last May is still at the Camp in the Woods campground. From U.S. highway 169 go west on Sherburne County Road 9 for about 2 1/4 miles. Go south on 144th Street for 1/2 mile to 289th Ave. Take this road west to the Camp in the Woods sign on the left. Check the pines in the campground and along the road. The bird was seen as recently as July 4th by Ned Winters.

And finally, a EURASIAN TREE SPARROW is being seen at a feeder in Clay County. If you would like specific information on how to see this bird, you can call me at 612-780-7149.
