This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday July 29th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A PIPING PLOVER was found at Hamden Slough NWR in Becker County on July 19th, and it was still present on the 20th. Check at the drawn down slough just east of the refuge headquarters. On the 18th a boat survey of Pine-Currys Island near Morris Point on Lake of the Woods was conducted by Tony and Ann Hertzel and Peder Svingen and they found a single pair of Piping Plovers. The mud flats along Carver County Road 30 west of the town of New Germany produced 13 species of shorebirds on July 25th. This included BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. Blaine Seeliger counted as many as 50 Buff-breasted Sandpipers from several locations in Dakota County. Some of the better locations were at the junction of Blaine Ave. and county road 66 where 27 birds were counted. Also check along county 66 to the west of Blaine.
At Big Stone NWR in Lac Qui Parle and Big Stone counties, an AMERICAN AVOCET was seen among the 13 species of shorebirds found there by Bridget Olson on the 28th.
Becky Mellentin still has at least two NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS near her northeast Minneapolis yard. They have been there since July 11th. Please call Becky before visiting..
On July 24th a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was still Sibley State Park in Kandiyohi County. Look along the paved bike path that runs west of the boat launch.
A CINNAMON TEAL was reported from Carlos Avery Refuge in Anoka County on the 29th. From the junction of Interstate 35W and Anoka County Road 17 go north on 17 for 9.5 miles. Turn east on county road 18 and go just over 1/2 mile and turn south. Drive 2.5 miles, taking the right fork in the road. The teal was reportedly seen in the pool with the Black Tern colony.
The HENSLOW'S SPARROW found July 11th near the town of Jordan in Scott county was still present as of July 27th. From the junction of U.S. highway 169 and Scott County road 9 drive north a few hundred feet then west on to Scott County road 57. Go one mile and turn north on to Beaumont Avenue. Go about a quarter of a mile and look to the west about 50 yards from the road.
