64:1381978-06-04Itasca S. P.Hubbard(vote 2-5); previously voted on, accepted and published (The Loon 50:169). Although U1e observers' composite description is consistent with U1is species, viewing conditions were difficult and none of the observers was apparently able to independently identify the bird. The identifiFall1992 cation was also largely based on the song, but the description on U1is song does not fit Kentucky Warbler. Not Accepted

59:1431987-04-25near OrtonvilleBig Stone(vote 2-5). The sketchy description was not complete enough for such an unusual record, and the facial pattern described did not accurately describe a Kentucky Warbler. In addition, the details clearly show the observers were influenced by looking at field guides at the time of the observation, and these inexperienced observers had difficulty getting a clear look at the bird. 70:1561998-05-14Duluth Twp.St. Louis(record #98-48, vote 2-5). The description does not preclude — and the observer did not consider — the possibilities of a Canada Warbler or an immature male Common Yellowthroat, both of which have face patterns resembling a Kentucky Warbler. Also, the non-secretive behavior of this bird would seem inconsistent with this species. In addition, the observer did not know the species is unusual in this part of the state, and the description of the bird was written from memory three weeks later. Not Accepted

(Please note that a record which is only means that the documentation was not complete or convincing enough to include the sighting in The Loon, the journal of the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU), or in the MOU's archives of confirmed bird records. Such a vote does not necessarily mean the observer misidentified the bird or did not see it. These are in no way intended to be critical of the observer. The only purpose is to highlight the difficulties an observer may encounter while identifying or documenting these and similar species.) Accepted

92:922020-05-26Minnesota Landscape ArboretumCarver(record #2020-026, vote 0-7). This record involved a heard-only bird whose song, unfortunately, was very briefly described. While the observer was well-experienced with this species, there was simply not enough description to justify acceptance. Not Accepted

93:1112021-08-30 Arrowhead Lane Southwest, near RochesterOlmsted (record #2021-067, vote 2-5). Most members had difficulty with the challenges presented by this observation. The observer claims great familiarity with the species call notes on the wintering grounds in Guatemala where he has lived for the past 20 years. However, there are gaps in what one would expect in the written description. For example, the observer noted “the extensive black area below the eye”, but fails to describe the crown or spectacles.
