1980-10-131980-10-25Hennepin10/13-25 Hennepin (fifth state record) (first county record)
One bird coming to a feeder in Bloomington, Hennepin County 10-14 RJ, 10-17 DB, OJ, 10-18 AJ, GS, 10-20 VL (see THE LOON, Vol. 52, No. 4, p. 187).
54:421981-09-11Lowry Nature CenterCarver(vote 3-4) Although there was agreement the bird could have been a Rufous, it was bothersome that rusty or buffy flanks and undertail coverts were not seen, which is a very obvious feature of the Rufous Hummingbird. It was felt that the bird might have been an aberrant Ruby-throated or possibly an Allen's. Not Accepted
56:171983-07-30AnokaAnoka(2-5) It was unanimously agreed that the description could fit an adult male Rufous Hummingbird; however, the bird was only apparently seen for a few seconds, the details did not include light conditions (the apparent colors of a hummingbird's plumage can change considerably depending on the light), no rufous on the tail was seen, and the observer apparently did not take a critical look at the bird since she wrote it was "not of great import to me". Not Accepted
56:171983-09-25Detroit LakesBecker(vote 1-6) This could have been a female/immature Rufous, but nothing in the details precludes the possibility of Broad-tailed or Allen's Hummingbirds; although these are not as likely in Minnesota as the Rufous, they have to be considered. Although this bird appeared larger than the Rubythroateds with it, there was "less white in tail than ruby throats" but such does not fit the Rufous . At one point the back in the sun looked "bronzey-green or greenishbronze", but this only "appeared" to be the case for "just an instant". Not Accepted

64:151991-08-051991-08-06PetersonFillmore(vote 3-4). The entire description of the bird only mentioned "distinct rust coloration", and the majority felt that such a description was too sketchy to be accepted. Nothing was said about where the rust was located on the bird's plumage nor about what exact color was meant by ''rust" (which might simply indicate an immature male Ruby-throated's "golden cast on upperparts", as mentioned in the Geographic field guide). There was also uncertainty about the light conditions: a "full bright sun" was mentioned. but if it were in the observer's eyes it could have given a misleading impression of the bird's actual color. Not Accepted

70:441995-07-251995-08-18Lake Bronson State ParkKittson(record #97–38, vote 0–7). Although the hummingbird was present for several days, seen by several observers, and may well have been correctly identified, the entire description of the plumage consists only of the following: “golden brown in color to tan.” It was unanimously felt that such a description is not nearly specific enough for acceptance. Not Accepted
69:1521996-08-07near WaubunBecker(recirculated record #97–01, vote 0–7). The Committee unanimously felt this was indeed a Selasphorus hummingbird; however, the possibility of it being an Allen's is not ruled out since the description includes no information about the back color. Not Accepted

This adult female hummingbird was carefully studied and hundreds of images were obtained by many observers over a period of 2½ weeks. Most observers and expert opinion leaned towards its identification as Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus), but in-hand examination could not be arranged and even the best photographs of the spread tail were insufficient to conclusively eliminate the very similar Allen's Hummingbird (S. sasin). 79:502006-08-10near WarroadRoseau(record #2006-074, Not Accepted as Rufous Hummingbird, vote 1–6; Accepted as Selasphorus, vote 7–0). The submitted photograph of this subadult male hummingbird confirmed its genus, but did not show the extent of green on its back or the shape and width of individual rectrices. The latter are critical for separation of rufus from the very similar Allen's Hummingbird (S. sasin) (Stiles 1972, Mitchell 2000, Howell 2001). Not Accepted
