55:1171973-08-01near ElySt. Louis(vote 34) This sighting was reported to an experienced observer four months after the observation. Their identification was based on the "pattern of pure glistening white below and jet black on the back" and "the long forked tail." It was agreed that the identification may well have been correct, but the majority had the following reservations: there was no clear indication of how experienced the observers were at bird identification; the observers did not write up their own record (it was submitted by the experien~ ed observer mentioned above), and while second-hand reports can be acceptable to M.O.R.C., they are less than desirable especially when extreme rarities or belated reports are involved; the description was not very complete, with no indication of where exactly the bird was black or white and no indication of size; and the possibility of Forktailed Flycatcher, which has occurred in Ont. and Wis., has not been eliminated. 2002-08-112002-08-20Dakota8/11-20 Dakota (first county record)
Two documented reports, presumably referring to the same individual: 8/11 Dakota (U.S. highway 52, near Hampton) †LWC, and 8/25 Scott (county road 46, just north of county road 2) †DAB. Originally reported (CVK) at the latter location on the 11th.
1375:412002-08-202002-08-25near Vermillion and near ElkoDakotaScottand near Elko, Scott County (record #2002-83, vote 7–0). Although the locations of the two documented observations are about 15 miles apart, indications are this was probably the same individual at both locations. The written descriptions from two independent observers are both somewhat incomplete, but each observer provided good sketches of this kite, a species which would be difficult to confuse with any other bird. 79:502006-09-05Wild River State ParkChisago(record #2006-075, vote 2–5). Though probably identified correctly, the description of this bird was limited to “distinctive forked tail,” “white undermarkings on its wings and body,” and comments about its size and graceful flight. It was felt that a more complete description would be needed for acceptance. The observers were unfamiliar with this species and did not sketch the bird or write down a description until after numerous references were consulted. Not Accepted

90:832018-05-11Arden HillsRamsey(record #2018-020, vote 2–5). Possibly a correct identification, but the observers simply did not use the right terminology when describing it. They write “black primaries and white secondaries” which is incorrect for this species. The secondaries are also black. It is the under wing coverts and axillaries that are white (plus the head and belly, which are not mentioned). Not Accepted
