two pairs closely observed by JJG and RBJ at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge, Marshall Co. on 6-13 are very noteworthy. Nearest breeding area is the shores of Hudson Bay in northern Manitoba and Ontario (Godfrey, The Birds of Canada, Ottawa, 1956). Late migrant recorded at Duluth, 6-1 (JJG).

61:101988-07-09Carlos Avery WMAAnoka(vote 3-4). Although it was agreed the observer may well have seen a Greater Scaup, the majority felt not enough was seen to eliminate Lesser Scaup. The identification was based on impressions of bill and body sizes, but there was no direct comparison available with anything to make these impressions diagnostic. The only other useful mark noted was the "flat-crowned" head-shape which tends to suggest Lesser Scaup more than Greater; also this scaup was apparently in eclipse plumage when head shape is unreliable.
