53:104-1071981indexThe Prairie Falcon: Minnesota's Next Regular?
54:1471981-06-30Anna Gronseth PrairieWilkin(vote 0-7) Although the falcon flew directly over the observer at relatively close range, no black axillars were seen. Also the "brown" back and distinct "single black moustache" suggest this was more likely an immature Peregrine. Not Accepted
54:1471981-07-30Clear LakeSherburne(vote 1-6) Although it was quite possible the identification was correct, the observer only saw a "sandy colored back" on a "large" falcon while he was apparently driving at highway speeds. Since the black axillars were not seen, since some immature Peregrines can get quite pale brown on the back, and since it is difficult to see birds well and accurately while driving, it was decided to reject this record. Not Accepted
54:421981-09-07DuluthSt. Louis(vote 2-5) Although black "wingpits" were seen, the bird had a dark back and cap which do not fit a Prairie Falcon. Also at close range, which was the case here, a Prairie Falcon shows a light eyeline and narrow whisker marks, but it was stated neither of these were present. Not Accepted
54:1471981-09-11Wilkin(vote 1-6) While the falcon was "large" and was "light brownish" above, no black axillars were seen even though the bird was seen in flight at close range. A size indication like "large" means little without comparison to another species, and the back color does not preclude Gyrfalcon, Merlin or Peregrine which can appear light brown in some cases. Not Accepted

71:361998-07-18Waubun W.M.A.Mahnomen(record #98–80, vote 3–4). The majority felt the description is too vague to preclude other species of raptors: there is no indication of why the bird was a falcon; the size is unclear, since nothing was present for comparison; mention of the “dark markings under the wings” is not specific enough to indicate whether this refers to the Prairie Falcon's dark axillaries and under wing coverts; and the rest of the description of the head, breast, back and tail could also fit a female kestrel, Merlin (richardsoni race) or immature Peregrine Falcon (tundrius race). 74:1612002-03-30Lake TraverseTraverse(record #200227, vote 3–4). This bird may well have been correctly identified, since it was described as having a falcon shape, brown overall plumage, lighter underparts, and a “band of dark feathers in the center of the wing from the shoulder to the wrist.” While this last feature seems to indicate a Prairie Falcon's blackish wing linings, it is somewhat unclear from the description where exactly the dark feathering was on the wing, and Gyrfalcons also have somewhat similar dark wing linings. Additionally, the size of this bird is unclear from the description, and nothing was seen of the head pattern. Not Accepted
